A3.4 GEOS–3 vertical levels

The native vertical resolution of GEOS–3 meteorological fields is 48 pure sigma levels, extending from surface pressure up to 0.01 hPa.

In order to minimize the amount of memory required to run GEOS–CHEM, users may select to run with a reduced vertical resolution of 30 sigma levels. For the reduced vertical resolution, sigma levels above ~85 hPa are lumped together online.

Altitudes and pressures listed below were computed assuming a surface pressure of 1000 hPa.

A3.5 GEOS–4 vertical levels

The native vertical resolution of GEOS–4 meteorological fields is 55 hybrid eta levels, extending from the surface up to 0.01 hPa. The first 14 levels from the surface upward are pure sigma levels; the rest are fixed pressure levels.

In order to minimize the amount of memory required to run GEOS–CHEM, users may select to run with a reduced vertical resolution of 30 eta levels. For the reduced vertical resolution, eta levels above ~50 hPa are lumped together online.

Altitudes and pressures listed below were computed assuming a surface pressure of 1000 hPa.
